About these figures

What advertised pay means

Advertised pay is the pay employers publish in their job postings. It is not a measure of what employers end up paying. The figures are base pay ranges from postings and exclude bonuses, commissions, and equity.

Only some postings list pay, so every figure comes with the number of postings and employers behind it and the share of postings that list pay. Employers that list pay may pay differently from those that do not, so these figures describe postings that list pay, not the whole job market. Each posting with pay counts once, so an employer with many similar postings carries more weight. The employer count shows how many distinct employers a figure comes from.

How pay is annualized

A posting lists pay when it gives a pay range we can turn into a yearly figure: an hourly, monthly, or annual rate in US dollars, or with no currency on a US posting. Hourly pay is multiplied by 2,080 (40 hours a week for 52 weeks) and monthly pay by 12. We take the midpoint of the range, or the one figure given, and keep it only when it falls between $20,000 and $750,000 a year. Daily or weekly rates, pay in another currency, and pay outside that band count as not listing pay.

Median and percentiles

The median is the middle figure among postings with pay. A quarter of those postings advertise less than the 25th percentile and a quarter advertise more than the 75th percentile, so the middle 50 percent runs between the two.

Minimum sample sizes

We show the share of postings that list pay only for groups with at least 50 postings, and advertised pay only when at least 50 postings from at least 10 employers list pay. A page under those minimums keeps its counts, says why its figures are held back, and asks search engines not to index it until it has enough postings.

Role families and states

Role families come from how we classify each posting. Role family figures cover US postings, including remote postings open to workers in the US. A posting counts toward a state when its location names that state, across every role family. Remote, Puerto Rico, and multi-state postings count by role family but not by state. A role family gets a page for a state once at least 50 postings from at least 10 employers in that state list pay. Other covers postings outside the listed role families and postings we have not classified yet, and it has no page of its own.

The figures are recalculated from the live job pool regularly, and each page shows the date of its figures. Job pool insights has the share of postings that list pay by state and role family, with the state pay transparency laws.
