Software engineer resume example, tailored to a job posting

Software engineer resume (mid level), before and after tailoring to one job posting. Each change is explained, and so is everything the posting asked for that the resume does not claim.

Everyone and everything in this example is fictional. Taylor Sample, Example Freight Systems, Sample Health Billing, Example Logistics Cloud, and Example State University do not exist, and the job posting is invented.

About this example

This example shows what the generator is told to do and what it checks, as described in the resume guide. A real draft is written by an AI model from your own profile, so its wording will differ from this one, and from one run to the next. When the model is unavailable you get a profile-based resume instead, which the guide also describes.

Below is the text of the ATS resume (.docx). The human-readable PDF has the same content in the template you pick. Neither this example nor any draft predicts how an employer's hiring software will rank a resume.

Professional Summary

Backend software engineer with six years building C# and .NET services and REST APIs, currently on a shipment tracking API that serves about 40 million requests a day. Cut its p95 response time from 820 ms to 190 ms with Redis caching and rewritten SQL queries. Runs services in Docker containers on Azure and shares on-call duty for the platform.

  • Take a one-week on-call shift every six weeks for the tracking platform.
  • Review pull requests for a team of six engineers and wrote the team's code review guide.

What changed, and why

  • The latency result leads, in the XYZ shape. The posting is about fast APIs and database performance, so the p95 bullet moves to the top: the result first, the measure (820 ms to 190 ms), then how (Redis caching and three rewritten queries).
  • C# answers the language requirement. The posting accepts "another compiled language such as Java or C#", so the summary opens with C# and .NET. Go appears nowhere, because the profile does not list it.
  • Containers and cloud are described as they happened. The profile says Docker containers on Azure, so the resume says exactly that. It does not turn the move into Kubernetes experience.
  • On-call moves up and reads in the present tense. The posting asks for an on-call rotation, and the profile shows one in the current job, so "On call one week in six" becomes a present-tense bullet higher in the list.
  • A weak opener is replaced. "Worked on the shipment tracking API" becomes "Develop the shipment tracking API", which says what Taylor does without adding scope the profile does not give.
  • Years and skills come from the profile. Six years comes from the experience dates. The same eleven skills appear in a new order, backend skills first, with their labels copied exactly.
  • Facts are copied, not written. Name, contact details, job titles, employers, dates, education, and certification names come straight from the profile. The model only chooses their order where order can change.

What it left out

Taylor's profile does not support these, so neither the resume nor the cover letter claims them:

  • Go. Not in the profile. The posting accepts C#, so the resume answers with C# instead.
  • Kubernetes. The profile shows Docker containers on Azure, not container orchestration.
  • Mentoring other engineers. The profile shows code reviews and a code review guide, not mentoring, so the resume describes the reviews and does not call them mentoring.
  • Kafka and Terraform. Neither is in the profile.

Code checks only the resume's structure. Every entry in the Skills section has to match a skill in the profile, and every job title, employer, and date has to match an experience entry. A draft that fails either check is not used. Nothing checks the free text. The summary, the bullets, and the whole cover letter could still mention a skill, tool, or number the profile does not hold. Keeping them to the profile is an instruction to the model, not a check, so read every draft before you send it. If you do have a skill a posting asks for, add it to your profile before you generate.

Application for Backend Software Engineer at Example Logistics Cloud

Dear Hiring Team,

The Backend Software Engineer role at Example Logistics Cloud asks for the kind of work I do now on a high-traffic API. At Example Freight Systems, I work on a shipment tracking API that serves about 40 million requests a day, and I cut its p95 response time from 820 ms to 190 ms by adding Redis caching and rewriting three slow SQL queries. I have six years of experience building backend services in C# and .NET, most recently on traffic at that scale.

Your team wants engineers who keep services fast as traffic grows and who can move them onto containers. Along with the latency work, I moved four of our services from virtual machines to Docker containers on Azure with our platform engineer, and I hold the Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate certification. My main tools are C#, .NET, SQL Server, and Redis, along with Docker, Azure, and Git.

Before that, at Sample Health Billing, I built C# REST APIs for claim status lookups used by 300 clinics. I raised test coverage on our billing service from 41% to 78% with unit and integration tests, and I fixed a nightly batch job that had been failing about twice a week. My skills also include unit testing and code review, and I studied computer science at Example State University.

I would like to talk about the performance work ahead for your APIs and how my experience with caching, SQL, and containers could help. Thank you for your time and for considering my application.

Sincerely,

Taylor Sample

  • The first sentence names the role and the company, and the opening leads with the latency result and its numbers.
  • The letter does not mention on-call work or code reviews. Those bullets are fourth and fifth in the profile, past the three highlights per role the letter sees.
  • Like the resume, it claims no Go, Kubernetes, or mentoring.
  • It runs 254 words, within the 250 to 350 the model is asked for, and closes by asking for a conversation and thanking the reader.
  • The letter is written from a shorter view of the profile: the three most recent roles with their first three highlights each, the first 12 skills, the certifications, and education without dates.

How this example was made: we wrote it by hand, following the instructions the generator gives the AI model and the checks it runs, rather than running the generator. A real draft from the same profile would word things differently.
