Teacher resume example, tailored to a job posting

Teacher resume (mid level), before and after tailoring to one job posting. Each change is explained, and so is everything the posting asked for that the resume does not claim.

Everyone and everything in this example is fictional. Robin Sample, Example Ridge Middle School, Sample Creek Middle School, Example Valley School District, and Example State University do not exist, and the job posting is invented.

About this example

This example shows what the generator is told to do and what it checks, as described in the resume guide. A real draft is written by an AI model from your own profile, so its wording will differ from this one, and from one run to the next. When the model is unavailable you get a profile-based resume instead, which the guide also describes.

Below is the text of the ATS resume (.docx). The human-readable PDF has the same content in the template you pick. Neither this example nor any draft predicts how an employer's hiring software will rank a resume.

What changed, and why

  • The license is named in the summary. The posting requires an Oregon license with an English Language Arts endorsement, and the profile holds one, so the summary names it. It is already the only entry under Licenses and Certifications.
  • The reading result leads, in the XYZ shape. The posting asks for data-driven instruction, and the profile's strongest result is exactly that: the result, the measure (48% to 61%), then how (small groups from benchmark data). It moves to the top, and "Data-driven instruction" leads the skills.
  • The IEP work moves up and is spelled out. The posting asks for support for students with IEPs, so the co-teaching bullet moves to third and spells out "individualized education program" on first use.
  • Google Classroom stays in its own words. The posting names Google Classroom, and the profile bullet already does, so it stays as written.
  • The debate club answers the extracurricular ask. The profile shows Robin coaches debate, so the summary closes with it. It does not promise to sponsor a new activity.
  • Grade levels stay exact. The summary says grades 6 and 7, as the profile does, even though the posting is for grade 8. Six years comes from the experience dates.
  • Facts are copied, not written. Name, contact details, job titles, employers, dates, education, and certification names come straight from the profile. The model only chooses their order where order can change.

What it left out

Robin's profile does not support these, so neither the resume nor the cover letter claims them:

  • An ESOL endorsement. The license in the profile is for English Language Arts only.
  • Experience teaching 8th grade. The profile shows 6th and 7th grade only.
  • 504 plans. The profile mentions IEPs, not 504 plans, so the resume names IEPs alone.
  • AVID training and Spanish. Neither is in the profile.

Code checks only the resume's structure. Every entry in the Skills section has to match a skill in the profile, and every job title, employer, and date has to match an experience entry. A draft that fails either check is not used. Nothing checks the free text. The summary, the bullets, and the whole cover letter could still mention a skill, tool, or number the profile does not hold. Keeping them to the profile is an instruction to the model, not a check, so read every draft before you send it. If you do have a skill a posting asks for, add it to your profile before you generate.

Application for Middle School English Language Arts Teacher (Grade 8) at Example Valley School District

Dear Hiring Team,

The Middle School English Language Arts Teacher (Grade 8) opening at Example Valley School District asks teachers to use assessment data to group students, which is how I teach reading now. At Example Ridge Middle School, I raised the share of my students meeting the state reading standard from 48% to 61% over two years by adding weekly small-group reading based on benchmark data. I have six years of classroom teaching in grades 6 and 7.

I teach five sections of 7th grade English language arts, about 140 students a year, and I use Google Classroom for assignments, feedback, and family updates. Before that, at Sample Creek Middle School, I taught four sections of 6th grade reading and writing and wrote a six-week persuasive writing unit that our grade-level team adopted, the kind of shared planning your posting describes. My skills include data-driven instruction, reading intervention, differentiated instruction, and writing instruction.

Families hear from me often. At Sample Creek, I called or emailed every family at least once a quarter, and in my current classroom I post updates for families in Google Classroom. I would bring that same habit to your families. I hold an Oregon Preliminary Teaching License in English Language Arts for middle and high school, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Example State University, and a bachelor's degree in English.

I would welcome the chance to talk with you about your 8th grade team, your common assessments, and how I could support your students. Thank you for your time and for considering my application.

Sincerely,

Robin Sample

  • The first sentence names the role and the district, and the opening leads with the reading result because the posting asks for data-driven grouping.
  • The letter does not mention the debate club or the IEP co-teaching. Those bullets are fourth and fifth in the profile, past the three highlights per role the letter sees, so moving one up would let the letter use it.
  • It does not claim 8th grade experience or an ESOL endorsement.
  • It runs 258 words, within the 250 to 350 the model is asked for, and closes by asking for a conversation and thanking the reader.
  • The letter is written from a shorter view of the profile: the three most recent roles with their first three highlights each, the first 12 skills, the certifications, and education without dates.

How this example was made: we wrote it by hand, following the instructions the generator gives the AI model and the checks it runs, rather than running the generator. A real draft from the same profile would word things differently.
